One of the founding principles of SToRMS is that an understanding of mental health issues should be a mandatory part not only of the national curriculum but of the PGCE Teacher training.

Research has shown that many teachers feel out of their depth when tasked with dealing with a pupil who needs emotional support. In order for teachers to be able to support pupils’ mental wellbeing and emotional resilience they must have adequate training in these areas themselves. This knowledge should be seen as just as important as other academic requirements of teacher training.

“Mental health should be a part of every teacher’s learning, so they can actively support the mental health needs of children and young people, and step in before problems escalate.”
